Dianella is one of Australia's most beautiful, versatile, and genuinely tough native plants. Known commonly as Flax Lily or Blueberry Lily, this evergreen strappy-leafed perennial is a staple of residential gardens, commercial landscapes, road corridors, and public green spaces across the country — and for good reason. Drought-tolerant once established, frost-hardy, adaptable to full sun or deep shade, and extraordinarily low maintenance, Dianella delivers year-round structure, seasonal colour, and ecological value with minimal effort from the gardener.
Online Plants stocks Australia's most comprehensive range of Dianella varieties — grown by specialist native nurseries and delivered directly to your door. Every plant is backed by our exclusive 30-Day Guarantee to Grow.
A Native Plant with Year-Round Appeal
What sets Dianella apart from most ground cover and border plants is its multi-season ornamental value. In spring and summer, arching stems carry sprays of delicate star-shaped flowers in blue, purple, or lavender — each bloom featuring distinctive golden-yellow anthers that attract native pollinators, particularly the stunning blue-banded bee. As the season progresses, these flowers mature into clusters of vivid indigo or blue-purple berries that persist well into autumn and winter. Few plants offer this kind of sustained visual interest, and the berries are a genuine drawcard for native birds, adding ecological value to every garden that includes Dianella.
Year-round, the evergreen foliage provides reliable structure and texture. Depending on the variety, foliage ranges from steel-blue and blue-grey to deep forest green, cream-variegated, and red-stemmed — giving landscape designers and home gardeners a genuinely diverse palette to work with.
Choosing the Right Dianella Variety
Online Plants supplies varieties from three key Dianella species, each suited to different garden conditions:
Dianella Caerulea Varieties — including the ever-popular Cassa Blue, King Alfred, Little Jess, and Lucia — are the most adaptable and widely planted. Cassa Blue is our most recommended all-round variety: compact at 40–50cm, richly blue-foliaged, prolific in flower and berry, and reliable across almost all Australian climates. Little Jess is the smallest variety in the range at just 20–30cm — perfect for fine-textured edging, small pots, and neat low borders. King Alfred is the large-scale workhorse of the range, growing to 60–80cm and forming the dense root systems that make it one of Australia's most effective plants for erosion control on slopes and embankments.
Dianella Tasmanica Varieties — including Wyeena, Tasred, Silver Streak, Blaze, and Emerald Arch — are the shade and humidity specialists. Native to the cool, moist forests of Tasmania and coastal Victoria, these varieties thrive in conditions that challenge many other plants: deep shade under established canopy trees, humid coastal gardens, and south-facing garden beds. Wyeena's cream-and-green variegated foliage brightens shaded spaces beautifully. Tasred's vivid red stem bases add drama and contrast. Silver Streak's white-striped cascading foliage is particularly striking in shaded containers and borders.
Dianella Revoluta Varieties — including Little Rev and the species Revoluta — are the dry-climate specialists. Found naturally across some of the most arid regions of Australia, D. revoluta varieties are the most drought-resilient in the range, thriving in full sun, poor soils, rocky substrates, and exposed roadsides where few other ornamental plants perform reliably.
Growing Dianella in Australia
Dianella is a genuinely easy plant to grow, and its adaptability makes it suitable for gardeners of all experience levels. It performs well in most soil types — from sandy coastal soils and rocky substrates to moderately heavy clay — as long as drainage is adequate. In poorly draining sites, incorporate gypsum and coarse organic compost before planting, or mound the planting area slightly to keep the root crown above any pooling water.
Plant at the same depth as the existing root ball, backfill with existing soil, firm in gently, and water with a diluted seaweed solution to encourage root establishment. Apply a 5–7cm layer of coarse organic mulch over the root zone — keeping mulch clear of the crown — to retain moisture and suppress weeds through the first summer.
Water consistently for the first 8–12 weeks until plants are well established, then allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, all Dianella varieties are drought tolerant to varying degrees, with D. revoluta varieties capable of extended periods without supplementary irrigation. Fertilise once each spring with a low-phosphorus native-specific slow-release fertiliser — high-phosphorus products can harm Australian native plants over time.
Ongoing maintenance is minimal. Remove dead or browning leaves by hand every few months to keep plants looking fresh. Spent flower and berry stems can be trimmed after fruiting. Unlike some native grasses, Dianella does not require an annual hard prune — established clumps that become very dense can be divided in late winter (July–August) to rejuvenate the planting and generate new plants at no cost.
Planting Density Guide
For borders and pathway edging, space plants 30–40cm apart. For mass planting and ground cover, space 40–50cm apart — approximately 4–6 plants per square metre depending on spacing. For erosion control on slopes, plant in staggered rows 40–50cm apart. For volume orders and commercial landscape projects, contact our team for a free plant count and volume pricing.
Online Plants delivers directly from our specialist native nurseries to your door across Victoria, New South Wales, ACT, Queensland, and South Australia — including all metropolitan and regional areas. Plants arrive healthy, well-rooted, and ready for the ground. Delivery typically takes 3–7 business days. Due to biosecurity restrictions, we are currently unable to deliver to Western Australia, Tasmania, or the Northern Territory.
