Growing Dianella in Australia

Dianella is a genuinely easy plant to grow, and its adaptability makes it suitable for gardeners of all experience levels. It performs well in most soil types — from sandy coastal soils and rocky substrates to moderately heavy clay — as long as drainage is adequate. In poorly draining sites, incorporate gypsum and coarse organic compost before planting, or mound the planting area slightly to keep the root crown above any pooling water.

Plant at the same depth as the existing root ball, backfill with existing soil, firm in gently, and water with a diluted seaweed solution to encourage root establishment. Apply a 5–7cm layer of coarse organic mulch over the root zone — keeping mulch clear of the crown — to retain moisture and suppress weeds through the first summer.

Water consistently for the first 8–12 weeks until plants are well established, then allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, all Dianella varieties are drought tolerant to varying degrees, with D. revoluta varieties capable of extended periods without supplementary irrigation. Fertilise once each spring with a low-phosphorus native-specific slow-release fertiliser — high-phosphorus products can harm Australian native plants over time.

Ongoing maintenance is minimal. Remove dead or browning leaves by hand every few months to keep plants looking fresh. Spent flower and berry stems can be trimmed after fruiting. Unlike some native grasses, Dianella does not require an annual hard prune — established clumps that become very dense can be divided in late winter (July–August) to rejuvenate the planting and generate new plants at no cost.
