Liriope — widely known as Lily Turf or Monkey Grass — is one of the most versatile and hardest-working plants in the Australian landscape. Evergreen, drought-tolerant, frost-hardy, and extraordinarily adaptable, Liriope earns its reputation as the essential go-to groundcover and border plant for gardeners across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia who need reliable, year-round structure with zero fuss.
Whether you're edging a pathway, mass planting under trees, creating a low-maintenance lawn alternative, controlling erosion on a difficult slope, adding structure to a courtyard, or simply finishing off a garden bed with a neat, colourful border — there's a Liriope variety perfectly matched to your space, style, and climate.
Online Plants supplies Australia's most comprehensive range of Liriope varieties grown by specialist nurseries and delivered directly to your door — healthy, established, and ready to go in the ground. Every plant is backed by our exclusive 30-Day Guarantee to Grow
Why Liriope Is Australia's Most Popular Groundcover and Border Plant
Liriope muscari and its cultivars have earned a permanent place in Australian garden design for one compelling reason: they do everything the garden asks of them, without complaint.
They grow in full sun or deep shade. They tolerate frost, drought, coastal conditions, poor soils, and competition from tree roots. They're evergreen — providing year-round structure and foliage colour with no seasonal gaps. And from late summer through to autumn, they produce spectacular upright spikes of purple, pink, or white flowers — held proudly above the foliage — followed by ornamental black berries that add additional seasonal interest well into winter.
Unlike many popular edging and groundcover alternatives, Liriope doesn't spread invasively, doesn't require constant trimming, and doesn't die back in winter. One annual cut-back in late winter or early spring is all it takes to keep any variety looking fresh, lush, and vigorous. For Australian landscapes — residential or commercial — few plants deliver the combination of beauty, toughness, and low maintenance that Liriope does so consistently.
With 10 quality varieties stocked by Online Plants, Liriope suits every scale of planting: from a single elegant pot specimen on a balcony to thousands of plants across a commercial landscape project. Our horticulturalists work with specialist growers to ensure every variety we list is selected for performance in Australian conditions.

How Many Liriope Plants Do I Need?
For a border or pathway edging: Space plants 20–30cm apart. This creates a dense, neat border within one growing season that fills completely and looks well-established.
For mass planting and ground cover: Space plants 30–40cm apart for standard coverage. For faster fill and immediate density, space at 20–25cm. A planting rate of 6–9 plants per square metre gives excellent coverage.
For a lawn alternative: Space plants 30–40cm apart in a grid pattern. Isabella is our top recommendation for this use — one mow per year keeps it looking neat and fresh.
For under-tree planting: Space plants 30–35cm apart. Liriope Elmarco and Evergreen Giant are particularly suited to competing with tree root systems in shaded conditions.
Quick calculation: For a 1-metre-wide border, 10 metres long (10 sqm) at 30cm spacing — you will need approximately 90–100 plants. Contact our team for a free quote on large-volume landscape orders.
How to Plant and Care for Liriope in Australia
Soil Preparation
Liriope is one of the most adaptable plants in Australian horticulture and grows well in virtually any soil type — from sandy coastal soils to heavy clay. For best results, improve soil at planting time by blending through compost or well-composted manure. Ensure the planting area is free-draining — while Liriope tolerates wet periods, it does not perform well in consistently waterlogged soil. In clay-heavy gardens, add gypsum and coarse organic matter to improve drainage before planting.
Planting
For border planting, rather than digging individual holes, turn over the whole planting row and improve the soil along the entire length for even establishment. Plant at the correct spacing for your application (see above), firm in gently, and water thoroughly with a seaweed solution to reduce transplant stress and stimulate early root establishment. Apply a 5–7cm layer of organic mulch over the root zone, keeping mulch away from the plant crown to prevent collar rot.
Watering
Keep plants consistently moist for the first 8–13 weeks until well established. Once established, Liriope is highly drought-tolerant and requires only occasional deep watering during extended dry periods — making it one of the most water-efficient groundcover choices for Australian gardens. Overwatering in heavy clay soils can cause root rot, so allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings once plants are established.
Fertilising
Apply a balanced controlled-release fertiliser in early spring each year to support lush growth and maximum flowering. A liquid seaweed solution applied every 4–6 weeks through spring and summer is beneficial for plant health and stress tolerance. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilising, which encourages lush leafy growth at the expense of the ornamental flower display.
Annual Rejuvenation Cut
The most important maintenance task for Liriope is an annual cut-back in late winter or very early spring (July–August in most of Australia) before new growth begins. Using a sharp mower, line trimmer, or garden shears, cut plants back to approximately 5–8cm above ground level. This removes tired, tatty winter foliage and stimulates a flush of fresh, vibrant new leaves that emerge strong and glossy through spring. This annual cut also rejuvenates flowering — well-cut plants flower more prolifically than those left uncut. If mowing is not possible, the new growth will cover any discoloured old leaves by spring or summer, though flowering may be reduced.
Pests to watch for
• Snails and slugs — most common in cool, moist conditions. Control with iron-based snail bait (pet and wildlife safe). Check regularly under the dense foliage canopy where snails shelter.
• Scale insects — occasional on older established plants. Treat with 2–3 applications of horticultural oil spray at fortnightly intervals.
• Root rot — caused by persistently waterlogged soil. Ensure good drainage at planting time. If symptoms appear, improve drainage and treat with a phosphonate-based anti-fungal product.
• Liriope anthracnose (Colletotrichum) — fungal leaf spotting in very humid conditions. Improve air circulation, reduce overhead watering, and treat with a copper-based fungicide if severe.

Frequently Asked Question - FAQs
What is Liriope and why is it so popular in Australia?
Liriope (Liriope muscari), commonly called Lily Turf or Monkey Grass, is an evergreen, clumping perennial grass-like plant native to East Asia. It is enormously popular in Australian gardens for its exceptional toughness, year-round foliage structure, beautiful summer and autumn flower spikes, and ability to thrive in conditions from full sun to deep shade. Its low maintenance requirements and drought tolerance once established make it one of the most widely used border and groundcover plants across Australia.
When does Liriope flower in Australia?
Most Liriope varieties flower from late summer through to autumn — typically January to April — with peak flowering in February and March. Flowers appear as dense, upright spikes held above the foliage in purple, lavender, pink (Samantha, Isabella), or white (Munroe's White). After flowering, small ornamental black berries form on the spent spikes and persist into winter, adding further seasonal interest.
Can Liriope grow in full shade?
Yes — Liriope is one of the few ornamental plants that genuinely thrives in deep shade. All varieties tolerate full shade reliably, making Liriope the ideal solution for under-tree planting, shaded courtyard beds, north-facing walls, and other difficult low-light positions. For best flowering, a few hours of morning sun is beneficial, but plants will remain healthy and attractive in heavy shade. Variegated varieties tend to show their best foliage colour with some light.
Is Liriope drought tolerant?
Yes. Once established — typically after 8–13 weeks — Liriope is highly drought tolerant and requires only occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. This makes it one of the most water-efficient groundcover choices for Australian gardens, particularly suited to SA's dry summers, Melbourne's summer dry spells, and Western Sydney's heat. Regular watering is important during the establishment period to develop a strong root system.
Can Liriope be used as a lawn alternative?
Yes — Liriope Isabella in particular is widely used as a low-maintenance lawn alternative in no-traffic areas. It forms a dense, spreading ground cover that requires only one mow per year (in winter) to keep looking fresh and neat. It tolerates full sun to 90% shade, handles drought and frost, and grows in all soil types, outperforming traditional lawn grass in challenging conditions. It is not suitable for high-traffic areas as it does not recover from heavy foot traffic.
