Taxus Baccata Irish Yew

A stately deep evergreen conifer with a dense columnar habit. Low maintenance, slow growing and long lived.
Used widely as a hedging plant, Taxus baccata is the Irish Yew. With an upright habit or columnar growth habit it will reach around 3m in height with a 1m spread in around 10 years. Over time if left unpruned the plant will broaden in growth habit although still upright it will spread to 2m + near the crown. The Irish Yew is popular because it takes so well to shaping and pruning.
Taxus baccata ‘Irish Yew’ is a slow-growing, upright evergreen conifer valued for its dense, columnar form and rich green foliage. Commonly used as a formal feature in structured gardens, it works well as a specimen plant, in narrow spaces, or clipped for topiary. Its vertical habit also makes it ideal for framing entrances, lining driveways, or creating architectural contrast in mixed borders.
It pairs effectively with soft-textured or low-growing plants such as Buxus, Liriope, or Heuchera to highlight its strong form. For seasonal interest, companion plants like Hellebores, Hydrangeas, or ferns provide contrast and texture. Irish Yew also complements traditional woodland-style or shaded garden settings, particularly in temperate climates such as Melbourne or Sydney.
