Sizing guide

Magnolia Stellata Star Magnolia - This is the smallest magnolia and one of the most popular, growing very slowly into a rounded bush. It is fairly hardy, though frost can damage the grey furry buds and open flowers if they are exposed to morning sunshine. A position with early shade and sun later in the day is best. The beautiful flowers, pure white and lightly scented, open very early and before the leaves, eventually covering a mature shrub for several weeks. Plants tolerate lime, even pure limestone. This is one of the best magnolias for a small garden.

Magnolia stellata, commonly known as Star Magnolia, is a small deciduous tree or large shrub that belongs to the Magnoliaceae family. It is native to Japan and is highly valued for its beautiful star-shaped flowers and early bloom time.

The Star Magnolia features numerous fragrant flowers that emerge in early spring before its leaves appear. The blooms are usually white or pale pink and have a star-like shape, hence the name "stellata." The petals are delicate and narrow, creating an elegant and eye-catching display.

This Magnolia variety typically grows to a height of 3 to 4.5 meters and has a rounded or slightly spreading form. The dark green leaves of the Star Magnolia are oval-shaped and provide an attractive backdrop for the stunning flowers.

Magnolia stellata is well-suited for small gardens or spaces where larger Magnolia species may be too big. Renowned as a superb specimen tree. It thrives in well-drained soil and prefers a location with full sun to partial shade. Star Magnolia is also known for its cold/frost hardiness, making it suitable for various climates.

Overall, Magnolia stellata is cherished for its early, abundant, and showy blooms, adding a touch of elegance and beauty to landscapes and gardens.
