English Lavender is a species of flowering plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae. It is native to the Mediterranean region, but is widely cultivated around the world as an ornamental plant and for its essential oil, which is used in perfumes, soaps, and other cosmetic products. Known for its medicinal properties and has been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments, including anxiety, insomnia, and digestive issues. The essential oil of lavender has been shown to have a calming effect on the nervous system and is commonly used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation and reduce stress.
The flowers occur from early summer to early autumn and are solitary spikes that are a grey-blue (lavender) colour. There are oil glands all over the aerial parts of the shrubs but most are concentrated on the flowers.
Planting and Growing English Lavender
English
Lavender thrives in full sun and well-draining soil. Plant it in a location
that receives 6-8 hours of sunlight daily, and ensure the soil is slightly
alkaline with good drainage. Space plants 2-3 feet apart and water deeply but
infrequently to mimic its native arid conditions.
Caring and Maintenance of English Lavender
Prune English Lavender after flowering to maintain bushy growth and prevent legginess. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring and keep an eye out for pests or diseases. In colder climates, protect lavender from harsh winters with a layer of mulch around the base. Following these steps will ensure your English Lavender thrives and fills your garden with its delightful fragrance.
