Cupressus Swanes Golden Pencil Pine
Cupressus Swane’s Golden Pencil Pine is a striking, upright conifer valued for its narrow, columnar shape and vibrant golden foliage. This evergreen adds strong vertical structure to gardens and works well as a feature plant, screening tree or formal accent in modern landscapes. Its bright colour contrasts beautifully with darker green shrubs and provides year-round interest in Australian gardens.
At maturity, Cupressus Swane’s Golden Pencil Pine typically reaches 5–7 metres in height and around 1–1.5 metres in width, forming a tall, slender column. Its compact growth habit makes it ideal for smaller gardens, narrow spaces, driveway plantings, and boundary screens where a vertical element is desired without taking up too much space.
This conifer grows well across many parts of Australia including Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Canberra. Plant in a full sun position for the best golden colour and healthiest growth. It prefers well-drained soil, and once established it is relatively drought tolerant. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots, and apply mulch to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.
Excellent companion plants include Westringia fruticosa, Lomandra longifolia, Grevillea ‘Royal Mantle’, and Callistemon ‘Little John’. These plants complement the upright form with contrasting textures and colours while thriving in similar sunny, well-drained Australian garden conditions.
