Acer campestre Elsrijk

Acer campestre ‘Elsrijk’, or Field Maple ‘Elsrijk’, is a compact, deciduous tree known for its dense crown and brilliant golden-yellow autumn foliage. It typically grows to around 8–10 metres tall with a rounded, upright form, making it ideal for urban streetscapes, and medium gardens. The lobed green leaves are attractive throughout the growing season, turning vibrant before dropping in winter.

In Australia, ‘Elsrijk’ adapts well to cool to temperate climates including Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, and Hobart. It prefers full sun to light shade and grows best in well-drained soils. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant and handles pollution and pruning well, making it low-maintenance.

Plant during the cooler months and water regularly during the first summer. Mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly in winter to maintain shape or remove low branches if needed. Feed annually with complete organic fertiliser. 

Suitable companion plants include Prunus lusitanica (Portuguese Laurel), Nandina domestica (Sacred Bamboo), and Liriope muscari (Lilyturf).
